WHAT IS A JAZZ JAM SESSION?

TOP 4 TIPS FROM BRENT VAARSTRA: Ever wondered if you’re “ready” to go play at a jazz jam session or start playing jazz gigs? Or maybe you’ve been doing these but feel uncomfortable socially or even with your playing. In this video, I give out my 4 top tips for not “sucking” at a jazz jam or gig. These have little or nothing to do with your actual talent, which is the best part. If you want to be leveling up your jazz skills and taking things to the next level, check out my free mini-course: “Accelerate Your Jazz Skills” https://www.learnjazzstandards.com/accelerate-your-jazz-skills/

JAM SESSION VIDEO: Here’s a version of Benny Golson‘s composition “Along Came Betty” at a Smalls Jazz Club “Jazz Jam Session” in New York City on October 13th, 2012. The musicians performing are all very accomplished professional players – Saul Rubin on Guitar, Mike DiRubbo on Alto Sax, Jason Brown on Drums, John Chin on Piano, and Barak Mori on Bass.

MORE INFORMATION TO CONSIDER: A professional jazz jam like this one is typically very different than a student jazz jam like ours due to the experience level of the participating musicians is usually very high. Our student jazz jam session uses a list of music we will choose from and bringing the music is okay. You should practice this music at home before coming to play at the session.
